Offered is a vintage piece of

, a
Pere
Marquette
Railroad Lantern
with a
Clear Lantern Globe
. The frame is an Adlake 1 pc. top, single wire guard “Reliable” and is embossed on the shoulder “
PERE MARQUETTE
.” The lantern frame is in excellent condition; overall clean metal, lots of original tinning, stands straight, no extra holes drilled, dents, bent, broken or missing parts. There is some light pitting on the bail. The frame has a last patent date of 1913 and has an Inventory or Control # “349” stamped on the number pad. It comes with a threaded Adlake fount and embossed Adlake brass burner. The fount and burner appear to be in working order and should hold fuel and burn if desired. The fount has a small solder repair on the bottom but no visible holes. The wick easily moves up and down when the adjuster is turned. The Clear Corning Style Lantern Globe is in excellent condition and free of damage such as chips, cracks, scratches, or cloudiness. The lantern globe has an “H” cast below the top rim. As with any globe that was used in actual railroad service, there may be some minor roughness on the top and bottom rims that will not show when the globe is seated in the frame.

The company was reincorporated on March 12, 1917 as the
Pere Marquette Railway
. In the 1920s the Pere Marquette came under the control of
Cleveland
financiers
Oris
and
Mantis Van Sweringen
. These brothers also controlled the
New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad
(Nickel Plate), the
Erie Railroad
and the
Chesapeake & Ohio Railway
, and planned to merge the four companies. However, the
ICC
did not approve the merger and the Van Sweringens eventually sold their interest in the Pere Marquette to the C&O, with which it formally merged on June 6, 1947. The C&O has since become part of
CSX Transportation
